Is waking up feeling refreshed even possible? Apparently, it is possible so we can all rejoice, but how can we sleep better?
I know the struggle of turning your alarm off and dragging your sorry butt out of bed to scramble around and try and put yourself together before work. It’s not easy and quite frankly it’s a sorry sight.
I notice it’s harder to get up if I’ve been neglecting my diet and fitness, or I’ve been enjoying too much screen time. What other factors have been affecting my sleep and how I feel in the morning? Here are 5 tips to sleep better and wake up feeling refreshed.
1. AVOID CAFFEINE AND ALCOHOL BEFORE BED
I know what you’re thinking, I’m not getting rid of my glass of red before bed, hey that rhymed! If you knew how alcohol and caffeine affected you whilst you sleep, you would avoid it at all costs.
“Alcohol may seem to be helping you to sleep, as it helps induce sleep, but overall it is more disruptive to sleep, particularly in the second half of the night,” says researcher Irshaad Ebrahim.
2. AVOID SNOOZING
Whilst those extra 10 minutes of sleep may seem vital at the time, studies have shown that it’s easier to wake up the first time.
As soon as you’re alarm goes off, sit up, open the curtains and have a big drink of water.
You just went 6-8 hours without water, you are dehydrated girl!
3. GET YOUR MORNING STRETCH ON
If you’re like me and can’t convince yourself to wake up to exercise in the morning, light stretching is a great way to wake up your body.
It will get the blood flowing to your brain so you can start functioning properly.
4. JUMP THROUGH THE SHOWER
Starting your morning with a cool, refreshing shower will not only wake you up but is great for your skin and hair.
Having a cool shower is also time efficient because you won’t want to be there for too long.
5. EAT BREAKFAST. THE MOST IMPORTANT MEAL OF THE DAY, DAH
If I know I have a delicious breakfast or coffee waiting for me downstairs, I get excited to wake up in the morning.
By not eating breakfast, you are communicating to your body that your day hasn’t started yet.
Tip: if you eat early morning your body will become used to this and wake you up early for food!
6. START TO DEVELOP HEALTHY HABITS
Waking up feeling refreshed is also about having a positive attitude and developing healthy habits. Being thankful for a fresh new day to achieve your goals.
Remember the more you do these things, the easier it will become as you get into a routine.
