When it comes to finding your dream job, you cannot be lazy. It’s about being prepared and knowing what you want from a job.
Here are some job interview tips to prepare yourself for the “dreaded” job interview (which probably won’t be as scary as you think).
JOB INTERVIEW TIPS
You’ve taken all the steps to apply for the job of your dreams and the company calls/emails to set up a job interview. You totally freak out and can’t believe your luck but now what?
1. DO YOUR RESEARCH
A big mistake people make is applying for a job they really want, getting an interview but they know nothing about the company that’s hiring for the position. You might love their products/services but do you know their brand story? Who founded the company? What are their morals?
This business is obviously very important to anyone who works there. Make it a priority to be important for you too. Blow their socks off with your knowledge on their past, present and where you see their future with you on board.
2. DRESS FOR SUCCESS!
Dress appropriately depending on the position you are applying for but always dress to impress. It’s always better to be overdressed than underdressed. Keep jewellery and makeup to a minimum (unless you’re applying to be an extravagant makeup artist for a jewellery company, in which case, go nuts!)
If you were applying for a job at Supre, you wouldn’t wear all Nike. Remember to rep the brand were possible.
3. MAKE A GOOD FIRST IMPRESSION
When it comes to your career you want to make a good first impression on everyone. Plan to arrive 10-15 minutes ahead of time, in case you get lost, need to look for a park, pay for parking etc
Give yourself enough time to find the location, settle in and gather your thoughts.
Don’t forget to bring along some samples of your work, your resume a pen and any notes.
4. SHOW YOUR PASSION
You may have little to no experience in your chosen field but if you have passion and drive you are halfway there.
You may not be fully qualified for the position but people want to work with enthusiastic people who want to learn!
5. ASK QUESTIONS
This interview is not just about getting the job. You want to ensure you are the right fit for them and vice versa.
Any questions they fire your way should be followed up with examples from your previous experience. Then hit back with a question of your own.
6. NETWORK AND STAY ON THEIR RADAR
If you want something bad enough you have to let people know. Ensure you ask for contact details (business card) from the people you meet, this is called networking.
After your interview Follow-up with an email thanking them for their time. This way you know they have your correct contact details. It also gives you an edge over anyone who doesn’t network.
Interview preparation is so important because you never know who could help develop your career in the future. I hope these interview tips will help you prepare for your next job interview.
