I’m approaching my mid-twenties and whilst that’s not old, I’m also not 16 anymore. Which means washing my face with soap and moisturising with body cream is no longer good skin care.
Even though we know it’s important to care for our skin, it’s not until we hit our late twenties that we start to take notice. While we may be happy with how our skin looks now, it won’t be long before we start to notice fine lines and/or pigmentation.
6 SKIN CARE TIPS YOU NEED TO PRACTICE IN YOUR 20’S
There is absolutely nothing wrong with ageing but by taking preventative measures we allow ourselves to age gracefully.
Yet, some of us aren’t sure what those preventative measures are, so here are 5 skincare tips that I live by. They will help to keep your skin looking young and healthy.
DON’T RELY ON YOUR GENETICS
I’ve heard a lot of people say (and I often used to think it myself) “oh my mum has great skin at age 40 so I will too”, which is not completely true. Sure, genetics may play a hand in how you age but environmental factors also play a huge role.
I used to lay in the sun but never again! Sun exposure (whether you get burnt or not) can be really damaging. Even when you’re wearing sunscreen so avoid excessive sun exposure and cover-up.
ALWAYS APPLY SPF
Speaking of sun exposure, whether the sun is out or not, you should always apply sunscreen. Once you get burnt, the damage is done and there is no going back. Taking preventative measures by applying sunscreen every day is the only way to slow the aging process.
Quick tip: Make up for lost time by applying SPF not only on your face but also your neck, decolletage and all the way down to your boobs. As well as your hands, these areas show signs of aging first.
ALWAYS REMOVE YOUR MAKEUP
So many of my friends and family tell me ‘I don’t always take my makeup off before bed’. Whether it’s because they are too tired, lazy or just don’t realise how bad it is for their skin.
Leaving your makeup on can cause, it can also lead to long-term skin damage. Leaving your makeup on overnight can decrease your bodies ability to repair itself.
Quick tip: Keep makeup remover wipes by your bed. It’s not as good as having a regular nighttime routine but it’s better than leaving your makeup on overnight.
NAIL A 3 STEP MORNING & BEDTIME ROUTINE
It’s important to find and maintain a simple yet effective morning and nighttime skincare routine. Your routine should consist of at least 3 steps.
- Treat – with a toner, oil or serum.
- Protect – with a moisturiser suited to your skin.
This is something so many people neglect to do. Exfoliating your skin 1-2 times a week (in addition to your above routine) will ensure you’re removing dead skin cells from your face and inducing skin regeneration.
YOU ARE WHAT YOU EAT
I’ve been taking extra care of my skin lately as it has been breaking out more than usual. I have been researching skin mapping and any breakouts on your forehead are generally due to an unhealthy diet.
Breakouts on your chin and jawline are usually hormonal and any breakouts on your cheeks are usually brought on by stress.
Skincare isn’t just external, it’s also internal. Food and drinks like green juice, fresh fruit and veg are going to bring out the best in your skin. Avoid things like highly processed foods and dairy.
