5 Actionable Tips to Help You Practise Self-Love

One of the most important things you can do for yourself to help enhance your quality of life is to practise self-love. Self-love to me means accepting yourself flaws and all and learning to turn negative thoughts into positive ones.

Self-love directly affects so many aspects of our lives. Not only how you see yourself but how others will see you. If you’ve seen the movie ‘I Feel Pretty’ with Amy Schumer, you know what I’m talking about.

Self-love can directly affect the quality of your day-to-day life, your relationships and so much more. I’ve come up with my top five actionable tips to help you practise self-love and start thinking more positively.

Create a Self-Love List

In moments of negativity, it can be easy to tell ourselves that we aren’t worth it or that we could do better. In these moments it can be so important to refer to a self-love list that reminds you of all the reasons why you’re so amazing.

Sometimes we are quick to believe what people say to us or about us but we discard and forget all the amazing compliments people give us. This is often because our self-doubt corrupts our self-love, that’s why we need to build our confidence and remind ourselves of how amazing we truly are with our self-love list.

Build up your self-love and things will begin to change, you’ll add more and more to your list and less negative thoughts will be able to break through your wall of self-love.

Get More Sunshine

This is a small tip but it can have a huge impact. Going outside during my lunch break is the highlight of my day because it helps me to become energised and refocus for the rest of my day.

Getting your daily dose of vitamin D from the sunshine not only makes you feel amazing but it also helps to strengthen your immune system, muscles and bones. Vitamin D also stimulates the pineal gland, which is the part of the brain responsible for producing happy feelings.

Appreciate the People in Your Life

Sometimes we think more about the people that are no longer in our lives than the people who are. We don’t want to take the people in our lives for granted so remember to cherish every moment you have with the people you love. Be good to them and let them know how much you value them and why.

Take Time for Yourself

Whilst it’s important to appreciate the people in our lives, it’s just as important to take time to be alone and practise self-care. For you this might be going to the gym, meditating, doing your makeup or if you’re like me, taking the time to put on a face mask and watch some trashy tv.

It could be anything that helps you stay grounded and makes you feel good about yourself. It not only makes a huge difference in your quality of life but also to the people in your life because when you’re taking good care of yourself, your other relationships will flourish.

Change the Way You Think About Food

One of the biggest changes I’ve made in the past year is to change the way I think about food. Often we think of food as either “good” or “bad” food and when we consume “bad” food we feel guilty or punish ourselves.

We need to educate ourselves on the nutritional value of food and what’s in our food. Once we have a better understanding we can start to adopt healthier habits and understand that everything in moderation is ok!

Understanding that when we do indulge in a “bad” food we don’t have to beat ourselves up. Enjoy that moment and the craving it has satisfied, then your next meal might be something more healthy.

Once we have a better understanding of food and how it helps our bodies run we can eat more intuitively. It should also mean that we are less likely to buy into certain diets or weight loss gimmicks and instead, treat our bodies with respect and understanding.
